Sinopsis

The future for Icelandic Sheepdogs is not secure. There is a lot for us to do. We have time, at least for now.Our breed has a closed population because matings are only allowed between registered dogs. In most dog breeds there is a strong selection to use dogs that come closest to the official breed standard. Unfortunately, that reduces the number of dogs that contribute to the next generation. The breed loses important genetic diversity when that happens. In most dog breeds males contribute a larger percentage of the genes to the next generation than females because a male may be used more times than a female to produce offspring. These two strategies are not appropriate for us, at least for the present and for a few years to come.We should not breed to the breed standard yet. We should allow females and males to contribute equally to the next few generations. It needs to be said that we should not allow individual dogs with obviously harmful genetic conditions, whether visible to the naked eye or detectable using various tests, to breed except in very rare circumstances. It should also be said that we should adopt an 'open registry' to keep track of genetic issues and problems. We should adopt an open registry now at the beginning of our breed?s saga with the North American kennel clubs.
