Sinopsis

Lettres Ecrites à un Provincial (Letters Written to a Provincial) is a series of eighteen letters by Blaise Pascal, published in 1656-1657, that attacked the Jesuit casuistry. The letters are written as if by a Parisian to a friend in the provinces, and they are noted for their elegant style, wit, and biting satire. PascalâÇÖs work greatly influenced French prose and played a significant role in the ongoing conflict between Jansenists and Jesuits within the Catholic Church. These letters present a sharp critique of Jesuit moral theology, particularly their use of casuistry, which Pascal saw as a means to rationalize immoral behavior. Addressed to the educated public, the 'Provincial Letters' are a landmark of French literature and philosophical debate. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
